At Romar, we understand that producing today means taking an active role in facing the environmental and social challenges of the territories where we operate.

Through our company Argreen, we took the commitment in 2022 to be part of the Protected Productive Landscape (PPP) of ProYungas, a regional initiative that brings together 18 companies from different productive sectors, covering 2,500,000 hectares across Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Bolivia, with the goal of demonstrating that production and conservation can coexist in balance.

In the case of Argreen, the commitment materializes over a total area of 9,987 hectares, of which 71% corresponds to productive areas and 29% to wild areas. Within the latter, following the Territorial Ordering of Native Forests, 654 hectares are conserved in category I, 38 hectares in category II, and 203 hectares in category III.

For us, being part of the PPP means integrating into a management model that connects productive and wild areas under an approach of environmental sustainability and social promotion, supporting five lines of action: territorial planning, good practices, socio-environmental monitoring, communication, and building alliances.

Understanding to conserve: monitoring and technical evaluations

One of the pillars of our participation in the PPP is the generation of quality environmental information that allows for responsible decision-making. To advance this commitment, we have developed a series of concrete actions for surveying and monitoring, among which:

We conducted a wildlife survey using camera traps, aimed at recording medium and large mammals. The monitoring achieved a total effort of 393.1 days/camera, recording 261 independent events corresponding to 13 native species.

Among the identified species, mammals classified as threatened stand out, such as the mataco, considered Near Threatened, and the collared peccary, categorized as Vulnerable. Also recorded were key species for ecosystem functioning, such as the puma and the same collared peccary. This information is fundamental for designing improvement plans aimed at mitigating anthropogenic pressure, strengthening ecological connectivity, and improving the quality of habitats.

In parallel, we conducted the first survey of micromammals in the La Cocha area, in Argreen fields located in the east and south of Tucumán province. The study, carried out by technicians from the Institute of Regional Ecology (IER) and CONICET, provided valuable information about the local biodiversity of our lands.

Environmental indicators and concrete results

Within the framework of the PPP, this year we received a comprehensive report on the characteristics of the ecosystems present in Argreen's farms in the Chaco region of Tucumán. Among the main indicators, a proportion of natural environments of 2/5 stands out, which implies that for every transformed hectare, 0.4 hectares of natural environment are conserved.

The report also identifies the presence of 1,314 hectares of closed canopy chaco, 800 hectares of open canopy chaco, 119 hectares of shrubland, and 3 hectares of water bodies, with a low level of burned area and 0% of natural environments affected by recurrent fires. This is complemented by key technical evaluations such as the forest inventory, wildlife sampling, and the analysis of carbon in soil and carbon footprint, which allow measuring both emissions and the carbon capture capacity of our fields.

A commitment that transcends the company

Being part of the Protected Productive Landscape means integrating into a network that protects, in Argentina alone, 117 species of medium and large mammals, of which 27 are threatened, and 617 species of birds, including 49 species at risk. This positive impact transcends our individual operation and contributes to the conservation of one of the most biodiverse and strategic regions in Latin America.

At Romar and Argreen, we proudly take on this commitment. We believe that the future of the productive sector depends on our ability to balance agricultural production with environmental conservation, generating economic, social, and environmental value in an integrated and sustainable manner.
